Corvette Racing and Team Cadillac Personnel Receive Special Recognition Awards

Following the conclusion of the 2006 American Le Mans Series and the SCCA SPEED World Challenge Championships at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on Oct. 21-22, GM's factory road racing teams won special recognition in post-season award ceremonies.

Corvette Racing driver Ron Fellows was voted the Most Popular Driver in the ALMS, Corvette Racing's Dan Binks was honored as the GT1 Crew Chief of the Year, and Team Cadillac program manager Dave Spitzer was awarded the prestigious Jim Cook Memorial Trophy. Established in 2003, the ALMS Most Popular Driver award is determined by the fans in online voting. Fellows won the award for an unprecedented third year in a row. "It's a great honor to win this award again," said Fellows. "When you receive awards that are voted on by fans, they're hugely flattering. I want to express my sincere thanks to the fans." Joe Spielman Retires

GM Vice President of North America Assembly and Stamping Operations Joe Spielman recently announced his retirement for February 1, 2007 after 43 years of service with GM.

The Minnesota native joined GM in 1963 as a General Motors Institute (GMI) cooperative student sponsored by the Fisher Body plant in Flint, Michigan. He was inducted into the Museum’s Corvette Hall of Fame in 2001 and has been a part of many Museum events and functions. Joe leaves with the reassurance that the Corvette is in good hands. “I know that everyone at GM, from the engineers to the people who build it, will continue their relentless pursuit of making the car better and better. Performance Cars Vehicle Line Executive Tom Wallace has the right passion for the job, and Plant Manager Wil Cooksey is the personification of dedication, devotion, and understanding of the Corvette and how to manage a plant that builds world class cars,” Joe said. “The legend lives. May it live for many, many years.” Besides traveling out West, driving his Corvettes, and spending quality time with his family in his retirement, Joe says he has plans to purchase a 1960 Corvette, his 38th Corvette, and have it restored to an exact replica of the first Corvette he owned.

Give a Gift of Corvette Preservation

Preserving Corvette’s future heritage is an important part of the Museum’s mission and there are many opportunities to help us continue this goal and give a gift this holiday season that truly lasts.

Bricks from the original Corvette plant in Flint, Michigan are available through the Museum and can be a monumental gift for the Corvette enthusiast on your list. Purchase a historic Flint brick that can be personalized with your enthusiast’s name or Club’s name for the home or office, or join others who have purchased a Flint brick as part of our permanent “Flint Brick Wall” display in the Assembly Plant area of the Museum. Flint brick orders must be placed by Wednesday, November 15 to be placed or received in time for the Christmas holiday. GM Sales Initiative Promotion

We have 53 confirmed purchases from the GM sales initiative that is in place to help us add $25,000 to our Building Campaign.

The challenge of encouraging 100 people who currently own a non-GM vehicle (1996 MY or newer) to purchase any new GM Vehicle by December 31 was issued to us by a prominent member of the NCM who has had a long career at General Motors. If the challenge is met, this person will donate $25,000 to the Museum. The buyer does not have to sell or trade-in his non-GM vehicle to qualify. The deadline to participate is December 31. Please help us share this information with your Corvette club members and friends who are considering purchasing new Corvettes and other Chevrolet and GM products. We are over half-way there and need your help. Thanks to everyone for your support. Find out more about the GM Sales Initiative by visiting our website at: http://www.corvettemuseum.com/donations/sales.shtml or by contacting Connie Russell at: connie@corvettemuseum.com or (800) 53-VETTE.
