Hi there, C3VR fam!  I haven't been around much lately, been busy working on my other project - 1991 Suburban.  I've been putting together a 383 stroker for it over the past few months, just started her up for the first time today.  Running good!  I started with a 4-bolt main, TBI block from a 1990 3/4 ton suburban.  It was originally a flat tappet cam, but it had all the accommodations for an easy conversion to roller so I bought a donor vortec 350 and used it for the heads and complete valve train, including lifters, cam and pushrods.  (heads rebuilt and everything cleaned up and refurbed as needed).

Suburban is TBI fuel injected (and will stay that way - with significant mods) so I had to borrow the Q-jet and distributor from the vette to get this going!

Sal, it's just a stock L31 Vortec roller cam, what came in 350 trucks '96-'99 ish.  I know it may be a little small for a 383, but I'm using 1.6 ratio rocker arms to give it a bit more lift and I'm not looking for a top end screamer (it's going in a 3/4 ton 4x4 truck) just wanted a torquey low-end.  We'll give it a shot and if I hate it I can always swap later, probably to a LT-4 roller.  I had some limitations that pushed me into this cam: 1) vortecs require some mods if much more than .450 lift, 2) keeping OEM TBI fuel injection (with custom chip, bigger TB and 454 injectors) - this system is pretty unforgiving with too big of a cam or too much overlap 3) Needed to be a roller cam that would work with post-'87 style block (they had provisions for roller cams built in).  4) It's what I had!

Cam specs: 191/196 duration at 0.50", .44"/.46" lift with 1.6 rockers, 111 LSA.

Engine Specs: 1990 block, 4-bolt main, one-piece RMS, OEM roller cam provisions.  4.03 bore/3.75 stroke, Vortec heads, 9.5:1 CR with KB 135 pistons.  Eagle cast crank, stock rods.

Daveo76, Great sounding engine..Great street cam and great job on rocker choice..You will be pleased with your choices in cam and lifters.Yes,there is a lot of machine work needed for the higher gross lift cams and Vortex heads..I have 2 of these I built for friends and customers,VERY EXPENSIVE machining..Good Luck and Happy Motoring..Sal C                  NOSAL1

Thanks for the nice comments, Sal.  I'm excited about getting it going.  Now I just need to get the old motor out and the new one in!  Not sure when I'm going to find the time to do that, might not be till after Christmas, the way things are looking.....
