Just thinking out loud... My wife wants a ride, my 81 would be perfect for her w/the TH350. I want to go back to a ragtop. My last rag was an Alfa Romeo (I know, please just erase the memory). I always wanted a late 80s wide hip, whale tail 911 cabrio. I know NOTHING about them... Porsche guys and the forums, they aint Vette guys, thats for sure. Any thoughts? Thanks, Kevin..

Glorified VW....nuff said...
I'll tell ya whut I do know.
They're expensive to buy, and repair. The rear engined cars are a bit more high-tech, the front engined cars will eat yer lunch on repairs, and, did I mention, they are expensive?
The original 911 was nothing more than a 6cyl VW. Same trans, etc. The newer ones are far more advanced, of course. Fun? Heck yeah, as long as someone else is paying the bills for repair. I'll let ya in on a widdle secwet...they're Expensive to repair!
You think finding parts for a Corvette is tough?
Around here, you're more likely to find a 15year old virgin than a Porch part.
Try dealing with a Porch tech at a dealership....now THAT'S entertainment!
Common, Kev...do ya really wanna go German? Why not look for a convertible Vette? Or, at least a Viper?

My best friend has owned 2 Pooches. A '75 911. He sank 8 grand into fixing it up, and he only paid 7 grand for it. He ended up selling it after two years. I drove it once. Defifitely wierd, and I couldn't get over that constant smell of burning oil.
The second one he just bought. It's a 1987 944 turbo. A front engine car. He is about 2 grand into it for repairs so far. I did a little searching on it. Just PRAY the turbo never goes on you.HAHAHA
Just a little insight into the world of Pooches. If you want to go newer, you're going to pay. Likewise if you're going older.
Parts for the vettes are WAY cheaper.
Just my $.02 Take it for what its worth.

Ok, heres what I've found out so far.. Vette guys hate Porsches, Porsche guys hate Vettes. I like to idea of the 2 jump seats for the kiddies.. I was toying with the idea of an 01-02 z28/SS rag. Problem with these is private party sales, these guys think this are still valuable and dealers seem to know jack about the vehicles. A 15k mile car with a 6speed is a flat 20.000.00 not 30. I did look at a 02 T/A, the yellow ltd model. 2 things wrong - THE CHICKEN DECAL IS JUST DUMB and its yellow. I think Im gonna end up w/either an 95/96 Vette Rag or a 73-75..
I have owned a Porsche and maintance is spendy. I am not a lover of German cars. German engineers always seem to find the most complex solution to any engineering problem, and their cars reflect that. A Corvette, with bunchs of low end torque is a lot more fun to drive. I have yet to encounter terminal trailing throttle over steer in my Corvette. Also, you can find Chevy parts virtually anywhere, while Porsche parts are expensive...when you can find them. I, too, was one of those arrogant Porsche driving Corvette haters, but I have seen the light and made the journey back from the dark side.

There is no substitute for low end torque!

I don't hate Porches...I make gud $$$ fixin em!!
How 'bout a nice, 914 targa? Cheap to fix...
You could put a screamin chicken decal on it.
Jess messin wid ya, Kev...but I do think you'd be happier in a GM product, whether a Vette, or a F-body.

You're right about the F-Body prices, most guys either put $5,000 worth of mods into a $10,000 car and then try to sell for $15,000; or think that because the F-cars went away for a few years, they've got something "rare" and collectable. There are still some good deals to be found on them though, and those are worth it! I've had mine for six years now, 60,000 miles.

I was looking at the early 70's 911 but finding parts and their cost steered me away. Besides I like the looks of the vette much better
. I do have a 94 BMW 325is and have been able to maintain it without breaking the bank. Love the handling of it.

I have owned 5 different 911 SC's. Ask any Porsche purist and they will tell you that the 1978-1983 are the most reliable and the purist form of high performance driving. Don't buy one if you can't handle the rear end sliding. But they are a joy on the track once you get the hang of it. They do require maintenance, particularly valve adjustments. The tolerances are tight and must be periodically inspected. I my opinion, they are no more maintenance intensive than an old Vette. I have several good books on buying a used 911. Just like our Vettes, there are certain things to look for. I often think about buying another SC. They truly are a joy to drive if you can find a place to really enjoy it. Don't by a 911 older than a 78. They are underpowered and have the heavy magnesium heat exchangers. Not nearly as enjoyable and hard to sell. Most purists want an SC.
