I remember seeing them a lot when I was a kid. A rather creative fellow in my hometown had modified his to have regular trailer tongue connections which matched a special frame mounted hitch that he had fabricated. It looked a little strange but eliminated the bumper clamps.

Thats back when cars had REAL bumpers 

I have seen some really kool trailers for Vettes and motorcycles at shows.
If I was going to tow a trailer, that's the route I would go.
