Tux is right, Roger. It ain't so bad. You might be surprised at how many people will be able to understand you. Enjoy the wine and cuisine. Also, they have some cool cars over there. We don't get the really cool stuff here in the states.

Try to get out and see some of the other smaller towns and cities if you can. I was over in France 5 times with the Air Force. Very cool place to visit. It is a very old country with a lot of history.
The folks in Paris didn't really care for use Americans unless we were pulling money out of our pockets. The rest of the country was alot more receptive to us. Oh, and BTW...most Frenchies understand English. So don't let your guard down.
And if they give you a hard time, remind them who prevented them from winding up speaking German many years ago.

Have Fun!

Twice...
I wonder if the in-flight movie is gonna be "European Vacation"?

Next time get your wife to take her girl friend. She'll have more fun than dragging you around.

Hey Folks....Back from Europe

!!!

Thanks for the well wishes. I ended up having a good time and the wife never stopped smiling (she never even got upset with me about anything
). A week and half of almost total bliss.

A few items I thought was of interest while I was there (outside of the obvious tourist attractions in London and Paris):
1. Never saw a Corvette of any vintage. In fact I only saw 4 "American" cars while there, e.g., In London saw 1 Ford Fiesta and 1 Ford Focus. In Paris saw 1 Jeep CJ5 and 1 Chrysler P T Cruiser. London had the coolest cars and what we would consider the high end stuff like Audis, Mercedes-Benz, BMW's, Lexis, Jaguar, and even a few Rolls Royce. Of course alot of Mini Coopers. Paris was mostly small cars, e.g., Smart cars, Citroen, Renaut, and some other brands I never heard of before.
2. Business men in both countries wear suits and ties

3. The people who live in both London and Paris are thin!!
4. There are ALOT of middle eastern people in London!! Even saw an Islamic Bank there.
5. Women in London dressed more stylishly than the women in Paris.
6. In London we saw alot of people standing outside the pubs drinking beer. Wonder why they stand outside like that?
7. American Fast-Food restuarants we saw in London and Paris were McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and Pizza Hut and they were almost always right beside or across the street from each other. The KFC restaurants were huge! Guess they like Colonel Sanders over there
!

7. In London, at a fast food restaurant they ask you if you want to "Eat in" or "take away". I guess "To Go" is uniquely American.
8. In London you "mind" your step, your head, etc. We say "watch" your head, step, etc.
9. In London an "Exit" is the "Way Out"
10. A hotel breakfast buffet in London includes scrambled eggs, bacon, and sausage. I guess I expected something different. In Paris the buffet included scrambled eggs, bacon, and cold cuts. Never thought of having cold cuts for breakfast.
11. Expensive!! For example I paid 5.50 Euro for a bottle of coke which is somewhere around $10.18 American
. We were thirsty for a coke at the time and shared one.

I guess I'll be paying this trip off for a while. Maybe buying less stuff for the Corvette until I get it paid.
It's a great place to visit but I am glad to be back.

Glad to hear you had a good time and safe trip. I also would like to say about the cars thing, Notice that here in America we have SOOOO many imports but not even close on exports. I would love to see more Chevys or Fords make their way overseas for sale. Could do our economy good!

Thanks fellas. And I agree on the idea of getting more of our cars over there
. But if Ford and Chevy ever want to market more in England then they will have to tool up the manufacturing plants to put the steering wheel on the right side. Wonder how much that would cost them? By the way the folks in France drive cars from the left side like we do and drive on the right side of the road also. For some reason I thought everyone in European countries drove from the right side of the car like the English.
