The First Freedom

by William J. Murray, chairman of Religious Freedom Coalition

The concept of religious freedom was important to the Founders of this nation because they believed it was the “first liberty” and without it no freedom, no liberty could exist at all.

Were they right?

Allow me to pose these questions to you:

If the people do not have religious freedom, then do they have freedom of assembly?
If the people do not have religious freedom, then do they have freedom of speech?
If the people do not have religious freedom, do they have freedom of the press?
Can any nation which does not allow true religious liberty then call itself free?

The answer to all these questions, of course, is a resounding NO!

Checkout this link I beleive it will answer the question

The first ammendement says that expressly prohibits the Congress from making laws respecting an establishment of religion.

Interpret it as you may, but it says what it says. The seperation of church and state is not mentioned in the constitution, so in my mind, its a false statement. The constitution prohibits the congress from making laws that establishes a certain religion, one religion, that everyone must follow. This is why so many Jewish people moved here at the beginning of this country, religion has always been imposed on them, here they have religious freedom.

No, I'm not Jewish, but if I were, I would still want to live here.

I agree
it does not say freedom from religion. Religion  has been the center stone of our government and our laws. People should read Geoge Washingtons farwell address http://www.yale.edu/lawweb/avalon/washing.htm

Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens. The mere politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and to cherish them. A volume could not trace all their connections with private and public felicity. Let it simply be asked: Where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation desert the oaths which are the instruments of investigation in courts of justice ? And let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.

It is substantially true that virtue or morality is a necessary spring of popular government. The rule, indeed, extends with more or less force to every species of free government. Who that is a sincere friend to it can look with indifference upon attempts to shake the foundation of the fabric?

I really don't want to get into a long discussion on theology in politics. This site is about Corvettes, not theology. My intent behind the question was to ask why someone would be labeled "bad" because they happened to disagree with prevalent point of view.

[/QUOTE] Wally, I read your longer version........it really said a lot. You really expressed everything quite well. I'm sorry for sides being taken here. As I mentioned there isn't any good/bad sides. Differences in beliefs or opinions makes life interesting. You take care and don't worry about what others believe. Hey do you sing well? You must if you're in the choir.Thumbs%20Up Take care, Larry
