I was a big Monkee fan and built a few models of the Monkeemobile. There seems to be confusion on who REALLY built the car. On the model box it credited Dean Jefferies with designing and building the car. Also, the car sat out in front of Jefferies shop on display for a few years, right next to the Hollywood Freeway. It dissapeared in the mid 70's and reappeared in the early 80's re-painted in some fuzzy felt like paint and credited to Barris. The Batmobile was also redone with this crap too. The Monkeemobile was then put on display in the Barris showroom on Riverside Dr. in North Hollywood for many years, was seen at shows and then disappeared again.
So I guess the mystery is......who really designed and built the car?

I've always heard that George did the Monkey-mobile...never heered of Jefferies building it. Maybe Dean designed it, and George built it? Who knows...monjey-see-monkey-do...

The Batmobile came thru OKC for a car show this summer and broke down
on the highway here. Joe Loomis, the local Vette Smart Guy got
the pleasure
of having to try to work on it. He said it had been horribly
treated and only patched together. It was overheating due to a
stuck shut thermostat and also had a blown water pump. The owners
didn't want it fixed well, just patched enough to get it into the
trailer and make the car show.

A local guy here in Dallas has TWO Batmobiles, built by one of the same guys that built the original, TV Batmobile at Barris Customs. It uses a Lincoln chassis/driveline, and has all the bells & whistles...even the flame from the rear "turbine engine"!! He had problems with BOTH cars overheating, also...now they are upgraded to electric fans, and larger radiators. He keeps both of these cars immaculate. He also owns a Mach V Speed Racer, built from a '90-'91 Vette.

I do know that Jeffries worked for Barris prior to opening his own shop. However, all my childhood, we drove by Jeffries shop and there is was parked out front. This was when the Monkees were on the air too.

The Batmobile there are many variations of. As far as I know, Barris still owns #1 and he takes it to shows all the time.

It is my understanding that there were 7 Bagmobiles. 1 and 2 were used in the show and had steel bodies, and could be used in close ups.
The others had fiberglass bodies and were used for distance shots and stunt shots. Two were used for drag racing displays put on around the country. The interiors of the glass cars was not much to look at.
