Vette(s): Coupe 74 - 454 Drive it like you stole it!
Pre-note : this is in Canada, so traffic rules are similar than in the USA, but like any States, they are different by Province and I am talking in Kilometers and canadian money (not that the exchange makes much of a difference now a days...)

I got a speeding ticket in Ontario going 170 km/h in a 100 zone, in a rental car going from Toronto to Montreal for the weekend.
On a Quebec driver's licence, it's automatic suspension.

So I made some calls (I already have a court date written on the ticket itself....).

None of those traffic lawyer can slash it to zero points and their fees are all between 600$ & 700$.
That's just to represent me in court and have the sentence reduce to about 5 points (instead of 7); maybe 4 and still have a fine of 500$, but not lose my licence.

So... I'm up to 1100 at the best.  THEN, I need insurance when I move back to MTL (I currently live and work downtown Toronto, so I don't have a car, but I will in Montreal in a month or two).
This could easily add 1500$/year for 4 years
to my insurance (and many company won't insure me at all with a ticket like that)
+ the higher cost of renewing my driver's licences; probably at least 300/year for about 3 or 4 years.

Rough numbers : this adds up to about 7500$ to 8000$ over 4 years (those are just additional cost to "regular cost").

Now; one of them offered to make it dissapear like it never happended for 3200$.

I think I should go for it.

A friend of mine tells me that there is no such thing as completely dissapear and I tend to believe that being an IT guy.

Another friend tells me to call the court house directly and ask them for a higher fine with no points/no suspension; which is probably what that lawyer will do anyway.

Any thoughts ?

So for us MPH guys...that is like doing 105mph in a 60mph zone!  I don't know what the courts are like there, but usually traffic court here is held in huge groups. And by showing up, unless you want to actually plead your case, the judge knocks it down to a fine with no points.  However, in my experience... the person that has the highest speed in the room has to stay and talk to the judge.  I'd say going 70km/h (45mph) over the limit...you'll have a good shot at being the highest speed in the room.  Not to mention it is dangerously fast!

Not sure if that helped.
Good luck!

If the Canadian courts are similar to U.S. courts, you can go see the prosecutor and work out a deal where you'll pay a substantial fine with no points.
I recently got a ticket for making a U-turn, the fine was $85.00 + 4 points. This was my first ticket in over 25 years, the deal that was offered to me was no points & a $485 fine. Since I had no previous points, and my company provides my auto insurance, I paid the $85, took a National Safety Council Driving course for $40, which got 2 points taken off and called it a day.

All of this makes a radar detector sound awfully cheap....

I've really been wanting to find out what "top speed" on my car is, but every time I go out, I see a cop on the road!  I got up to 90mph on the way home the other day by accident (really - I was doing 70 and punched it to pass some retard), and that's the fastest I've had it.

I wanted a Corvette my whole life, but I never dreamed of all the wonderful people I would meet because of it!

I used to be a cop, so what I say is based on my experience in American courts. I simply don't know if the same rules apply in Canada, but they may be similar enough.

Take it to court...assuming you have a clean driving record (this has no chance if you don't), and ask for the court's lenience...admit what you did or plead no contest. Dress professionally and act respectful to the judge and the court. You will be amazed how many defendants dress like trash and act the same way toward the court, judge and the whole system. A judge gets very tired of that behavior and is impressed by professional, respectful conduct.

Simply tell the judge what happened and you don't want to lose your insurance, have it raised, etc. Don't beg, just be respectful and factual. Quite often I've seen a judge give offenders with otherwise clean records a choice between the fine and points and double the fine and no points. This also worked for me years ago before I was a police officer and was cited for driving 59+ mph in a 30 mph area in a car with collector's insurance. I got a year's probation. After a year with no violations, it was dismissed.

Again, I don't know Canadian laws or court rules, so this may not work there. You also may get lucky and the police officer may not show for court. In the US, that will get the case dismissed.

I like the check with the couthouse deal. In the states lawyers talk to the prosecutor and cut the deal based on the clients record, status, reputation,$$$, etc. I would guess that Canadian courts are similar since most court system foundations are based on a version of parlimentary procedures.

Any thoughts ?

Either pay the total amount to make it go away, or got to court dressed nice, and nicely ask the judge to forgive you a bit.    See what your counsole recommends, if he/she knows the judge and the habits in your area.

OMG  For the past few days, I felt like those people on "Deal or No Deal".

Well, this morning I hit the button... DEAL!

Here goes my winter projects....  if at least I had been driving the Vette when it happened, it would make for a better story.

btw; here's another deciding factor :
I currently live/work downtown Toronto without a car.  When I want to go see the family/friends on the weekend, I rent a car to go to Montreal.

The place I got caught is 4 hours from here, and the court date is set on a Monday morning at 9:30am.  Since I work as a contractor, a day off is a day without a pay.  So, to rent a car for 2 days, take a day off, sleep in a sleezy motel near the court, gas (about 500 miles back and forth) and meals..... just to go plea....  this adds up pretty quickly near the amount these guys would charge me just for showing up (they charged about 500$ to represent me).

If I was to choose that, they already told me they doubt they can reduce it to less than 5 points and I would still have a fine of probably 500$.

THEN comes the insurances...

So the way I see it, I'm "only" spending an extra 2000 to make the whole thing go away.  It would cost me more than that in extra insurance just for the first year and this would go on for about 4 years.

I still have my radar detector, but it's not legal in Canada.  I don't know what's the fine for getting caught with one, but the rumor has it they have detectors of radar detector and if they catch you with one, you might be in more trouble than "just" speeding.

Thanks for all the input.... it's good stuff.  Now that I took my decision, I'll probably sleep better.
