TEN COMMANDMENTS OF PET OWNERSHIP
1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.
2. Give me time to understand what you want from me.
3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well being.
4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up for punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.
5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.
6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.
7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.
8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old and weak.
9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.
10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you. Always!

I must say that I dread the day I will lose my boy. I have had him since he was 6 weeks old. its now nearly 8 years, and he and my other dog are essentially our children since me and my gf probably will not be able to have any due to her being a Quad.

Very well said. We had to put our beloved sheltie Hanna down 3 years ago and man was that tough. But I'm so glad we were with her in her last moments. I held her until she passed on. I now have two new girls(shelties) and Love them just as much. But Hanna will always have a special place in our hearts.
I posted this because it touched my heart, we had to put down a few dogs but the last I think was the was the hardest. I sat with Jack, our Chocolate Coker while he passed away from cancer just a few months back.
Owning a dog is a big responsibility and for those that don't think so, well maybe they shouldn't own a pet.
I dred the day we loose Frisco, he's been my best bud for seven years now. And ..... although I say I couldn't stand to see him go, if we do have to put him down I'm sure I'll be there.

How true it is. Winston is just another kid in this family. I don't even like it when we go on vacation and have to leave him with our friend at their farm.
Holly, our Shelby, was 14 when she passed away with her head on my lap driving her to the vet.
Misty, the silver gray cat died in her sleep one night laying by my chair.
Beast, the tabby cat came here at about 6 weeks old, he is now16 and doing well.
And our Boston Terrier is only 4 and has enough energy for several people and critters all at once.
A very good reminder Mark. So true, that WE are all they have and know. I've had Hunter for eight years now after rescuing him from an extremely abusive environment. The first few years were very difficult. He was scared of everything. Now he is a very health, happy dog with more energy than I have ever seen. He loves everybody now. Thanks for posting.

Mark, you really touched a nerve on this. I really appreciate all critters. My wife gets a little mad, because as we walk, I have to stop to pet or talk to every dog or cat that I see. We have three stray cats that adopted us. My wife says that they just wait to see me and have me touch them. They won't even let her touch them or anyone else. I think critters understand the real person that you are.........they seem to know who they can trust. Thanx for posting this!
