Low miles (was only 8,900 when I bought it in March 2006) - Now 54K miles. Original owner bought it as an investment for son's college expenses.

I'm trying to find and buy a good solid used car for my stepson for around $3500 or less. I would also prefer under 150K miles.
I've found a few that fit the bill and seem ok, but I'd like to get an idea of their longevity. I checked Edmunds.com to look at "Reliability," but it doesn't look like they really have any info on what happens over 100K.
Thoughts? Is there another good site out there that has this kind of info?
I wanted a Corvette my whole life, but I never dreamed of all the wonderful people I would meet because of it!

Like you could even FIND a Yugo! They've all disintegrated by now!

I think if I had to buy a car for 3500$.. the choices can be ok..I can get about anything you want..we trade in grandmas and grandpas cars quite often ..we got an Alero in last week that needed intake gaskets for 1k..only had 75k on it..parts manager picked up that one..look for some maintenance records if possible..I do like high mile cars versus 15 year old cars with 10k on them..lots of stuff rott when they sit..watch out for late 90's Honda ..they did have some crap trans in them..chances are they have already been replaced..I like cheap cars in general..Hyundai and Kia are cheap to buy and fix..if it takes a poop its not expensive to repair..I guess it depends if you want a car that will be destroyed in 6 months or a decent driver for around town..

Looking for a small econo box that will last a while. His job is no more than 15 miles away and he doesn't roam much farther than that. But I want something that I don't have to worry about for at least a few years (so that maybe he can buy the next one!)

Honda is always in the running, but it's hard to find a decent one in that price range with less than 200K miles. The two Kias my wife has had over the last four years have been great, but I wasn't sure how good they were in the ealry 2000's.
