My home PC has been attacked by a Trojan horse generic12.BYIF. It slipped under my protector and has really played havoc on my programs. My browser only partialy works, my utilities, such as System Restore, scandisk, disk defrag, etc. won't load. After hours of trying to repair damage, I've given up. I will prolly need a pro, but I just thought I would post to see if you geeks have any ideas. My AVG finds it and says it removes it. But my programs still won't work. Also everytime I run it, it finds it again. Help if you can before I adjust it with a sledge ammer. Thanks, "T"

The same virus has hit the computers at my work.  The techs there are using a variety of stuff and having a difficult time with it.  One of the things that they use, however, is http://www.malwarebytes.org/  just as Larry recommended.  The techs recommend the free version for home use.  I hope this will help.

I haven't had very good luck with the Spy-Bot program, but that's just me. It really did a number on the shop computer, so we got rid of it.
The Malwarebytes, is good. I found Avast from a comment that Adam made to me a few weeks ago. It seems to be really thorough.
Spyware Terminator is great, BUT...it doesn't want to play with others, so it might wreak havoc if you leave it "activated" all the time. Other than that, it works fine for scanning/deleting.

That's all I can add. My home PC had the same issues a few months ago. I couldn't restore, or anything like that. The Malwarebytes took care of the problem for me.
As has been said, there is NO one program that will keep you safe from every threat out there.....
Good Luck!

Joel, I have had Avast for a few years and have been real happy with it.
It is free, and all you have to do is to renew it once a year.
I highly recommend.  Plus, It is updated daily.

Well fellers. Once again I am overwhelmed by the help and response I get from all of you. Much appreciated. Here's where I'm at. For me my puter is just like my Vette. I can do only so much before I have to humble myself and call in a pro before I mess it up completely. The problem I have is my windows is so messed up that I can't even download new programs. I am getting the blue screen of death that shuts down my system. I was told I better get this fixed before it shuts down completely. So tomorrow its going to a professional who is sure he can fix it.

I will refer back to this thread so I can install a good software to keep this from happening again. I do have Ad-aware, Mcaffee Firewall, and AVG Anti-virus. Somehow this a__hole hacker found a way to get around them. Thanks a bunch for your help. Youse Guy's ROCK!! "T"
