Topic: What Engine Do I Have ?
in Forum: Off Topic
Well guys the "eagle eyed" friend I took with me to look at the impala turned out to be blind as a bat. He had the title in his hand and was looking on the engine pad to see if the numbers matched the vin #. He said "yes, it matches". Found out later that he was looking at the title number, not the vin number. I must admit that the last digits in the title number was close to the numbers on the pad.
I have checked the intake and exhaust manifold casting numbers are they are for a 62 chevy. I can't see the block casting numbers, hard to see because of the transmission rod.
I have never seen a number on an engine pad like this one. It appears to be T06i6S or T06165. Do any of you guys have any idea as to what this engine is? Another question...in 1962, did GM stamp the engine pad with the last digits of the vin number?
I've already bought the car, so I'm not concered about the engine matching now, just want to know what i've got here. I'll try to post more pictures of the pre-cleanup later. I worked on the car all day and only got the car washed, trunk cleaned out, and 1 quarter panel compounded and polished.

Here's how I see it....
T= Tonawanda assy. plant
06= June
1= First
65= 1965
Apparently not the orig. engine. I still haven't taken the time to research when GM started putting the VIN derivative on the stamp pad(59-60, I think)...You could simply have a GM replacement engine. They would not have had the VIN stamp.

In the October (2005 I think) edition of Hot Rod there is a picture and text (around page 110 - I'll look it up tonight) related to the engine number pad on Chevy blocks.
(No - I don't have that good a memory. The fellow working on "BIGBRRD" gave us the mag last weekend because it had an article on breathing new life into a tired Pontiac 400. I stumbled on the page while leafing through the rest of the mag.)
Joel,
I found this last night.
Engine ID Code Example: V0101CLJ - (V = Plant, 01 = Month, 01 = Day, CLJ = Engine Suffix Code)
Another example: T0830CTY - (T = Tonawanda, 08 = August, 30 = 30th day, CTY = 1970 396 Camaro, 375 hp, 11.0:1, TH400)
Code | Engine Plant | Code | Engine Plant
F | Flint (Motor) | S | Saginaw Service
H | Hydramatic | T | Tonawanda
K | St. Catherines, Ontario | V | Flint (Engine)
(McKinnon Industries Canada)
M | GM of Mexico |

A 62 would have definitely had the vin derivitive stamped on the pad...your's apparently does not...so, it's not the original engine. Strike one.

I can't say that I have ever seen Saginaw (S) listed as an engine assy plant...transmissions, yes, engines? This I do not know. I can only venture a w.a.g.

But...if service replacement engines were assembled there, then, maybe that's what you have.
Your pad does not have an engine suffix code stamped(RD/RC/SD,etc), either...another strike.
I have to say it is a service replacement engine. That's my story....I'm stickin wid it.

It is entirely possible that this engine was replaced under warranty, when the car was still fairly new. Try to find the casting #, and the casting date. This would help to narrow it down.
Look HERE to find this info.

Thanks for the info Joel. I'll try and get the casting numbers off the heads and block tomorrow. I know the intake is a '62.
Btw, the car is still fairly new.

Well , actually it is in the October 2006 edition of Hot Rod and is on page 151. There's a good picture that this text is on:
Chevy V8 codes are located on the pad in front of the righthand cylinder heAd. Two-letter codes were used from 1955-1969 ("IP" in this case). Three-digit codes (all letters or letters and numbers) started in 1970. There may also be an additional sequence (the second alphanumeric group here) that is a part of the VIN code for the vehicle the engine was actually installed in.
The codes in the picture are: T I 0 2 7 I P 6 1 0 2 4 7 4
Thanks Norsky
Joel, I was my wife's slave today, didn't get the numbers. Maybe monday.
The 'S" code is a 62-64, 250 hp 327 w/powerglide. The engine came with 10.5:1 compression and 4 bbl carb.. I have seen others with these markings as well. It was usaully in Impala's. I have this same block in my car now., although its been a liitlle massaged. This is a great engine and was the base for many haul-butt cars of the 60-70's. When I was in high school, you go to the street races and say you had a 350 and anyone would race you. You say you had a 327, there'd be some chin scratching and hesitation and "lemme see under your hood" before you could get a race.....
By the way, the engine code info is on the Year One web site....
