If I remember correctly, they didn't start stamping the vin until 68?. Also....the last three digits on ythe block casting number for the Impala engine should be 870.
Like I said, the 327 is a great engine. I bought the engine in my car in 1988 from the Recycler for $300.00. It had been rebulilt 2000 miles before i got it. It was installed in a Willys Jeep, the guy rolled it and said enough. The biggest draw back to this engine is it has 1.72 intake and 1.50 exhaust valves. (also known as Power Pak heads, last three of the casting number should be 520, listed as 283 heads, sometimes listed as 283 fuelie heads, 58cc combustion chambers) I replaced mine with some 461 fuelie heads and a bit larger cam (it came with a solid lifter cam from the P.O) and the thing runs bitchen!!!! I would go with the 350hp-327 cam and some 461 heads, pretty much your choice of a dual plane intake with a 600cfm Holley. Have this combo on a Target 350 in my son's '61 P/U and it boogies.....no overkill at all.......and my 327 has no VIN on the pad either

Reid, Thanks for that great info.
I talked to the lady I bought the car from again last night. She couldn't remember the engine ever being changed, but what had me worried was the fact that her husband bought the car in 1962 with a few thousand miles on it.
When I bought the car, I didn't even look at the miles on the odometer. When I got the car home, a friend came over to look at it and wanted to know if the miles were original. I said, "I have no idea, how many miles is on it'?. The odometer now reads 29,591 miles. I found a couple of NC inspection sheets in the glove box. On 8/21/73 the odometer reading was 18,496 miles. The other inspection sheet was dated 8/29/77 and the miles was 25,734. According to the lady, the last year the car was driven was 1978 and that seems right since the inspection sticker that is still on the car is for 1977/1978. I also found an insurance policy dated 1968, where he had this car and a 1962 VW insured.
When I talked to her last night, I asked her if she knew how many miles was on the car before it was stored. She said she had no idea but her husband had another car that he drove to work because that was his "baby". She stated that her son did drive the car to school his last 2 years of school. I asked her if the car could possibly have 129,000 miles on it and she said, "Lord no".
It's possible that I have a low milage 62 here but there is no way to verify that. I really feel sorry for the old gentleman who stored the car for all those years and is now stricken with alzheimers and will never enjoy the fruits of his labor.
HERE JOEL.....Get me the block casting number.

OK.....it's kinda hard to see, but it looks like either # 3782870 or # 3789817...

btw....I posted a friggin response to one of Reid's responses, and it disappeared......

I can't say when they started stamping the VIN # on other Chevy lines, but I'm sure Corvette started in '59-'60. (Let's see how long this one stays!

Joel- I can still see your response........hmmmmmm but you are right on on the block numbers!!!!
And kkfinch- I know people here have gone the 383 route....Try posting a new thread for it and you should get some input. I for one have not done it, so I am not the most in the know....And welcome to C3VR!!!!!!!!!!
