Vette(s): 1978 (25th Annv. Edition)Red, Black interior, 4-Speed Transmission, L-82, Power & Air, Very Rare Option Package(Only 145 Red 1978s with a 4 speed trans) & Very Original Car, with original Window Sticker, Bill of Sale and all documentaion.
I need your help locating a Program Read Only Memory Chip (PROM) for a 1990 Vette.

Part# 0079

It is my understanding that a 1989 chip will work in a 1990 Vetter if anyone knows how to get one of those too.

Please help me locate this part for a fellow Vetter.

Your help is greatly apprecitated,
John

John, the only place I know of to get a PROM is either from another ECM, or get one from a programmer, such as Hypertech. I think Mid-America has those, and probably other vendors also. I can all but guarantee that the dealer, or dealer network never had those available, except as an assembly with the ECM.
btw...my '85 has a Hypertech prom in it...

MidAm has This one, and This one...

Joel,

It is my understanding that this is not the item needed after speaking to my mechanic. He says the PROM is is not the same as the Hypertech chip. Me, I don't have a clue. Any additional help?
I did not go back to trial. Been payin my dues! What gives?

Well...yeah...it actually IS, if what he needs/wants is the PROM(Programmable Read Only Memory).
It's the only removable chip in the ECM...
When we replace the ECMs in these cars, the PROM stays with the car...the new ECMs do NOT come with the PROM, and, as I stated above, as far as I know, the PROMs were NEVER available separately from GM, unless you bought a NEW ECM w/PROM.
I had to get a new ECM for my '85 a couple of years back, from the dealer, and I had to remove my "old" prom, and install it into the new ECM. The Proms are no longer available from GM, since the aftermarket is taking care of that...and the newer ('94>) PCMs don't have PROMs anymore. The PCMs themselves are programable.
I'm not sure exactly what he's looking for, but if it's a prom, then the Hypertech(or other brand) is it...
You have my number, I think(if not, P/M or e-mail me). I'd be glad to talk to him and see what it is ya'll need...
