H14 would be the 14th of April, 1978, which would certainly put it right in the middle of Pacer production. The problem I see is the sequence number of 412687. There were only 6502 Pacers built, so how could you have  #12,687? Even for a regular production(non-Pacer) car, that VIN would have been built in December of '77.
I think someone has changed either the VIN plate, or the trim tag. I would suggest looking for the VIN stamp on the frame, to see what it is. I think this car has a checkered past...might be best to walk away from it....the VIN and the trim tag just do not jive.

but one of the org. pace cars had the VIN Pace Car #1 (Back Up Pace Car) Serial# 1Z8748S416658 (8Y047)and mine-
1Z87L8S412687
Even for a regular production(non-Pacer) car, that VIN would have been built in December of '77
how can the production seq. number be lower than the orig. back up pacer.
like is said /i have the chance to buy this car at a VERY GOOD price with a good title(not salvage)
could this vehicle be a predevelopment pacer for prom or photos.
where can I find the number in ()?
and I thank every one of you for your input

The original, actual, Indy used Pacers were definitely built before the production cars, no doubt about that. The design and specs had to be authorized by IMS before the cars could be selected as Official Pace Cars.
I'm by no means a Pacer specialist...that title indeed goes to Mark(cilrah). He has amassed tons of information on Pacers, including the actual cars used at Indy, and including pics of the actual Pacer's VIN plate.  Perhaps he will jump in and help....
I have a friend locally that owns on of the actual Parade Pacers, but I'm not sure what his VIN range is.

Sorry it took me so long to catch on to this post Confused Sparky I suggest you read this post I link below here:

These are the only Pace Cars from 1978, yes some were pre-production vettes but that VIN does not match anything I know of as being an actual Pace Car.  I've spent like 5 years researching these Pace Cars. I've even made friends with the curator of the Indy Muesum out of this reaserch, so if someone is telling you that is an actual Pace Car then they are full of crap.

Adam, unlike some years like 1969 when the Camero Paced Indy they would have like 50 Cars there, some for Pacing the race and the rest parade cars.  In 1978 they didn't have enough Vettes painted the same Pace Car scheme so they used 1978 Monte Carlos as parade cars.  There were only the 4 listed in my article, I doubt that your friend has a Parade Car from 78 unless its a Monte Carlo.

No it is not being presented as a pace car especially for the Price, I am just trying to get info on this car it seems odd that it has all of the body codes, all of the decals not installed in a GM(ragged and weathered for a few years) box plus the interior appears factory right down to matching T top numbers (Mirrored).Since there was a fire at GM the only build sheet to be found will be on the car if it made it on board, and I won't be able to access that until I buy it. Guys even if its not a pacer it has some type of history. This is rare find it sits on jack stands, wheels off, and no water or gas in it, in a controlled environment. I have 2 documents showing that it has 67,000 certified miles.
2 owner last owner died a few years ago and his wife wants to get rid of it! less than $12,000.00
I was just trying to find more info on it before I buy it.  Thanks for all of your input

There was a fire at GM????  I have heard that rumor but that is not the reason why you cannot find any Build Sheets from St Louis !!

[/QUOTE] Go for it Dan Thumbs Up  I can't tell you where to start but I can tell you I had a lot of fun researching these PC's.

And Sparky1 if you really feel you've got something there then I say go for it.  But keep in mind one thing, in '78 people were offering large amounts of money to get one of these PC's and that itself lead to a lot of fake PC's being sold.  Even today, if you go on eBay you can find a ton of original parts to include tires, decals, and even t-tops.  I even found and bought one of the rarest pieces on the PC, the Limited Edition console emblem.
