Question  Hello friends - I have a question I would bet some one of you knows the answer to.  Is there a way to find out the original sale history of my Vette just through the VIN #?   I would love to know where my car was originally sold and if possible dig deeper to find what was optioned on the car when it was new and how much it originally sold for.

Yes, Ken, there is a place that you can go to to get the cars original invoice (its on a thread somewhere on here, but smarter minds then mine will have to tell you where). If you had a Bowling Green car you could just call the factory (81-82). We sent away for ours and it had the original dealer and all hte factory installed options. Its cool!

I think that you have the infoo you need.  Most built sheets on vettes made after the Bowling Green facility opened can be gotten from there.  Anythin made in St Louis is gone.  Some say a fire destroyed all the records but not all beleive this!

Is there any source for similar info for earlier C3's?  '68 & '72 in particular.

Well Jerry as far as I know the info that may have helped us burned in a fire years ago..that's why the tank sticker is gold..without it one can't prove what the car came with..I think I found that info on the NCM website a while back..

Not ALL earlier records are gone, or "destroyed" in a fire. While it is true that some info was lost, a lot is still there. It's just that GM isn't interested in having anyone look for it. NCRS has acquired some really neat info from GM recently, such as Dealer shipping info on cars back to the mid '70s, that tells at least where the car was originally delivered. In doing that, it also gave us info on dealer codes from the time period.
Finding the original owner take more than that info, tho. Some states will do a VIN check and you can find all of the previous owners names, at least. Most state that do this charge for it. A lot of states have stopped doing this due to the Patriot act, and giving out personal info...
It's a crap shoot, but sometimes, it just worth the effort.

Hey Joel does that mean there is stuff for us chromies! I haven't joined NCRS because they don't have specific data for me..ie..how many of my color cars were made..etc..I guess someone someday may find a warehouse full of the info..

Well now...if all yer looking for is how many cars were painted Daytona yaller in '69, then joining NCRS isn't gonna be a good deal for ya. But...just where does ya thinks that sort of info would come from? Yup...GM!! There is a ton of info and documents that GM refuses to release....or I should say, the GM lawyers won't release.
Then again, ya have to remember that GM is in the business of selling cars...not providing records for folks 15-20 years down the road. The plant in Bowling Green has made HUGE strides in making sure that most of this info is archived/available for the cars built there, but....it was folks and organizations like NCRS that made that possible. The info for the earlier cars, what IS there, is mostly on microfiche...and really, really hard to read, what of it there is.
Perhaps one of these days, GM will allow someone to dig thru their many archives.....but....don't hold yer breath! Dead

Anyway, NCRS is much more than just boring stats....we're anal about other things, too...

Hey Joel thanks for the response..that does make some sense that GM holds the keys to everything..I just don't understand why they wouldn't release info..just hand it to the NCRS and they would treat it like gold..the more valuable these cars are only justifies the prices of new cars..so what her sayin is we need to get together in groups like the NCRS to get GM to open up more stuff! I guess I will start by bugging my neighbor about it..he's a GM DPM for GMPP...he always says he is just a little guy but maybe he's got people who's knows people!

Trust me Rich.....NCRS and other folks have been trying for years to get GM to agree to a release of relevant info. It just ain't happening. There have been a few(very few) authors that have been given access to certain aspects of the GM archives over the years, but never has anyone been able to un-earth the golden grail of documentation everyone is salivating for. Some of it just isn't there, period. There are many stories floating around about some particular guy up north(or the mid-west...who knows?) that has a TON of GM documents in a storage building. He has been threatened several times of legal action if any of it gets out without permission from GM.
And so goes the treasure hunt...Cry

And back to the original question, Ken, have you ever looked for a build sheet in/on your car? On top of the fuel tank, in the seat upholstery, behind the dash? That would be the way to go. Of course, if the sheet is gone, then yer back to square one.
You CAN possibly determine the original delivered dealer thru NCRS, or, as I said earlier, thru a ownership trace thru your local DMV. It's definitely worth a shot. I was able to locate the original owner of my '74 that way...

Ok so he needs to find some sort of tank sticker or build sheet..do they have the protecto plates in those years..I am assuming not since it is not mentioned..sounds like the NCRS is the best keeper of documents to go for what ya need..thanks Joel..I will reconsider the NCRS membership..
