It all started last fall when I was getting ready to go to the Black Hills in SD for a car show. I was detailing my engine and engine compartment. Pulled the intake to paint and close the exhaust crossover ports (chasing a heat problem). A little AF splashed in to the lifter area nothing to big or to worry about. Cleaned it up and changed the oil before I started it. Got it started and it started right up and idled fine, actually better than before. Ran the RPM up to 2200 and heard this deep knock
. Back down to idle sounded fine. I was cussing myself because I thought the little AF caused the problem. Long story short, pulled it back in to the shop, pulled the distributor and found fine filings
. Pulled the intake thinking the cam or something went. Everything up top looked good. Dropped the pan and it was a mess. Immediately seen the previous owner (or his mech) had welded on the crank and ground it off with an angle grinder or something. Also noticed rods 7+8 were blue and loose. Can't repeat the words on this forum that I said. After pulling the motor (396 BTW that was misrepresented) numbers 7+8 wrist pin piston and rod clearances were way to tight. You couldn't hardly pivot the piston on the rod and the rod tips were blue. Guessing that is where my heating problems were coming from all along. This motor wasn't assembled correctly 10yrs ago right before I bought it. So I have had this 427 block that I pulled from my Dad's old '68 Caprice sitting in the shop corner collecting dust. Tore it all down and it was worth rebuilding
. Had it boiled, magnafluxed, decked, and line bored. Got a set of done 454 heads (open chamber 118cc oval port) from a friend that I did some work for for free (ok a couple cases of beer). 10-1 pistons, mild cam (don't have the specs handy), performer air gap intake, 800cfm Edelbrock CVS carb. With the intake being taller I had to change to the L88 style hood (always liked that look anyway). Car is up running and the hood is painted. Looks good runs good, time to head to the Hills.
Sorry for the long road to the reason I am selling my BB hood. I am having some "geek" issues and can't seem to post pics at the moment.
take care
Bob
