Rear Spindle Removal
- Submitted by: rick jay
I have removed my rear spindles for a second time. The first was shortly after I purchased the car ('72) back in '78 when I was getting a pulse sensation in the brake pedal, caused by the rear spindles not being shimmed correctly. This second time I'm replacing the trailing arms with off-set ones. The first time I used a slide hammer. The right rear came off with some effort and the left came off with a heck of a lot more, too much more. It was a
real pain to say the least. Knowing what happen last time, I tried using a rather large bearing puller on the backside of the spindle and housing while hammering, but to no avail. I noticed in one of the many catalogs I get that they had a removal tool for this that attached to an air hammer. I ordered it, tried it and it worked fantastic, a heck of a lot easier and quicker than any attempts I tried before. Already having a compressor and air hammer also helped. I highly recommend it. One source is ZIP, part #SU-825. There are others that carry it and they are all about the same tool and price, $50 as of 3/2008. Choose your favorite supplier and see if they carry it.
