Hello All!

I am restoring a '78, and focusing on the interior up front.  I am quite tall (6'5") and find the seating in a 'Vette to be... umm... cramped.

I knew that going in to things of course.  Prior to tearing out the insides, I was driving this around with the lower seat cushion taken out to gain the head room.  That of course will not be comfortable on the first long trip.

Are there any aftermarket or other suggestions for a good replacement option on a lower profile seat?  If there isn't any thoughts I'll redneck my own foam lower portion and just live with that I guess.

Thanks for any input!!!

A lower profile seat? Than what?LOL If it's a vert, just keep the top down!

Never thought I'd see the day when I wasn't jealous of a tall guy (I'm 5'7")!!

Ha... it's a t-top, but the state I live in (Wa), we can never count on a lack of rain ;-)

Yeah, I've often felt that if I was only a little bit shorter I would have a few less head injuries!  I have a lot of scars just above my eye/ear level from walking in to things.  If I was ONLY 6'1" I wouldn't have hit them.

Then again, if I would have been watching where I was going....

I'm six foot and have everything at its max adjustment, I suppose that extra 5" must be a bastard.  Maybe surgery would be the answer?

Durn all da good smart Alec answers are taken...

Hmmnn.... lets see.

Okay, I have an Astro Top 1 piece roof in mine and ya gain a couple of inches headroom with it. Besides a better view, easier installation & storage ta boot.

Downside is it doesn't seal the greatest in the rain. (But I don't intentionally drive it in the rain...)

I've read on another forum about someone cutting out the driver floor pan and dropping it down a little (can't remember when they switched to metal floors instead of glass). You can also put in seats from other cars in there. Of course, not all will fit and would require modification. But you might be able to get some that naturally sit lower.

I'm 6'1", so I know a little about what you mean, but I don't know of any way to fix the height problem. I wish I could move the seat back another 6" or so, so my legs wouldn't cramp.

Hey fizzie, where in WA you from?  I'm in Olympia.  I'm 6'2" and don't have much trouble in my '78.  About the rain, once you get that thing restored your not gonna wanna drive it in the rain anyways.  I only get to drive mine like May thru September LOL

Maybe we can get together for dinner one evening. I'll see if Mark (cilrah) and Larry (1BADLT1) can join us for a C3VR mini gathering. That is if your gameWink

since no corvette owner let someone else drive his (her?) car your seat probably stay always in same position... soooo.. you might take off those "gliders" and make something  to fasten the seat on the floor that is a bit lower than the original gliders

Whatever you do, DO NOT get 1979-'82 seats. I'm 6'2 and installed them in my '78 and they sit up over an inch higher. My head stays jammed up against the rear roof hoop. It hurts on rough roads. About all you can do is drop your floorpan a coupla inches, cut 3" off the top of your head, or adapt.....

I think maybe THIS is what you're looking for if you need a bit more room for your legs and noggin. I've heard it works really well for that problem. Adams' Apple2007-04-06 20:20:10

Richard has a purty good set up here! My buddy is a tall dude too. He has the Recaro Seats in his Daytona 500 Fireburd an the give a few inches compaired to stock seats. Plus he raves about how comfortable they are. He has installed all of the same techniques Richard has mentioned in his Burd and it seems to be workin for him.

Me I can't hardly drive the thang cuz I almost dont have enuff limb reach. He sayz I look purty funny pawin at the wheel an grabbin after da shifter. Not ta mention me butt comes up outta da seat ta press the clutch in when runnin it through the gearz....
Hey Tux, how is the fit and seal on the astro top?
Overall I like my Astro top. I have read about several people who didn't for various reasons. It depands on what your looking for. I purchased it becuse I grew used to this style in from previous C4's. I liked handling 1 piece during installation and I wanted to see the world above me.

I have the orginal T's but I have never used them since the car and the T's were painted. They are in the top bags in my basement.

Pros:
A. Nice look with 1 piece smoked glass.
B. Stores easily in the back.
C. Room for luggage under the top when stored.
D. More head room.
E. Nice to see the world above.
F. Easy to install.
G. Inexpensive compared to new glass tops.

Cons:
A. Hard to seal above windshield from water.
B. Air gap above windows if rubber seal loses original shape.
C. Not OEM.
E. Can scratch easily if not cared for properly.

If it rains hard or steady mine will leak above the visors some. (Just enough to be annoying.) I don't think the mounting brakets adequately can pull down the top in those areas. I could build the gasket up some but it isn't that important to me. If I am in the rain it is purely by accident and the car is garaged most of the time. I hope that helps. If you have additional questions just ask.

If it were me and I had the cash, I would go with a custom seat bolted to the floor. Forget the adjustments. All the way back and down is what you need, so get what fits you.
