Have a 77. I have replaced the compressor,is all set for R134 conversion,put on new hoses. The Ac VIR,do i have to replace it with a new one? Or since im converting from old freon to new R134 can i use someother kind of dryer besides the VIR type?

The VIRs are rebuildable, if you want to go that route, or you can buy them rebuilt. I've never changed a VIR system over to 134, so I couldn't say for sure how they would work, but if it were me(and it's not), I think I would stick with the VIR set-up. I think if the system was working before, the VIR would be fine with the swap, as long as you remove it, and drain any oil that might still be in there out...

the best thing is replace the VIR, with like and kind, most Manufacturer's will not warrent the compressor unless you do so, inside the VIR is a thermostatic expansion valve, POA valve, and a dryer reciever, did  you flush and evacuate the system before disassembling the old system to get any water or metel shavings  out so as not to run the trash back into your new system, your 77 must be a early 77, as far as I know in 77 they changed to the R-4 short compressor from the long A6 comp.

Yes i did flush it all out. It is the early 77,Vin ends in 0100. Have the orange engine instead of the blue,and few other things that go with the early 77. So you feel its better to just buy a new VIR instead of taking it somewhere to be rebuilt?
