A while back my electric antenna motor would not stop running. I could not figure it out so I got up under the rear and snipped the wire. Any ideas?
Now that I'm driving it again I sort of miss the radio.Cry

I had that exact same problem with mine 2 weeks ago.
I didconnected the battery every time I shut the engine off.
There is a plug behind the carpet on the driverside, between the rear speaker and the driver's door.
Now that you cut the wire, you don't have to worry about that.
My problem was that the plastic "string" that raises and lowers the mast had broke. The motor still works fine.

Hopefully you didn't cut the signal wire.

A new antenna retails for $169.99.

I'll be listening to the radio without the antenna up for awhile. And the reception is just fine for me.

LOL Well  Dave, since I need to put new "Eagles" on before your cruise.....guess I'll be bringing along my cassette tapes, or pulling up the antenna by hand when I need it. Wink

The broken leader in the antenna is a relatively easy fix. The repair part is still available from GM parts counters or most of the vendors. GM part no. 22038195 or 97 with CB.
Remove the antenna and drill out all the rivets and split the plastic housing. You'll see how the nylon cable winds around the pulley and hooks in. Insert the small mast section up through the other two sections.
Close the case back up fastening it together with small bolts or pop rivets and run it through a few cycles on the bench. It will pretty much reset itself.
Hardest part is reaching up past the muffler to get it out.

Just about all of the GM masts are the same if you want to get one from a salvage yard. For $10.00 you can repair yours pretty quickly.

Take yours apart using Mike's instructions 1st and the other one will be a snap. You really only need the tape with the top mast piece out of the salvaged part.

Instead of rivets to reassemble I use small bolts and nylon locking nuts in the event I might have to return.

Personally, I wouldn't try to reuse a nylon leader/mast section out of a used one. I've had NOS units break, they just get brittle with age and being tightly wound around the pulley doesn't help.
I've got a 78/early79 NOS antenna on my shelf waiting for the ambition to put it on ebay. Before I do, I'll replace the nylon part.
Sold a NOS CB 78 antenna last year, changed the nylon leader as a precaution. Original snapped when I unwound it.

Changed the nylon leader in my black 79 back in 94. Couple years ago I borrowed the tip for another antenna I was rebuilding. Not thinking about it, I lowered the antenna without the tip on it. Got jambed. Had to take it out and open it up to get it unjambed. Nylon leader broke handling it. Only about 12 years old and maybe 500 miles on it.

Your right Mike about the age and the possibility of the tape being brittle. I wasn't advocating that just ant donor tape be utilized. I would pick on a newer model donor.

I replaced one in my Caddy and the donor car was the from a freshly wrecked new Oldsmobile at the time.

Another thing to consider is utilizing the entire unit. I gave $10.00 for the entire unit and could have made a mounting bracket to install it with no problem.

I choose to remove the tape and install it in the OEM housing after seeing how simple the unit was inside. I sent more time trying to locate the nuts and bolts than I did assembling the parts from one mechanism to another.

I could have just as easily fabricated a bracket during the time spent had I known I would have to make a trip to the hardware store for the nuts and bolts I wanted to use.Tuxblacray2008-07-04 05:08:59
