Does anyone have any experience or ideas how to install 6" x 9" speakers into the rear cavity behind the seats on a 76 L-82. I would like to build something if possible. I checked Ecklers Catalog and they want $200.00 + for a box with no speakers. I have bought good speakers and a amp and now I am trying to figure out how to mount them so they look good. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Vettedude76 |headscratch|

Hello vettedude 76 !
Welcome to the C3VR Forum.
Now I just install rear speakers on my 80 vette and it is the same.
First: you need a special rack that goes in the hole in the back

second: you need speakers grill that you screw your speakers on and after you screw the grill on the special rack that is install on the back.
You must be carefull that your speakers are not to thick or the back magnet is not to big because it will not fit and you will have to do some modification like a have done.
you could get the rack and gril at mid corvette or corvette central ect...
it is about $40 for the rack's and $40 for the grill's.

Thanks for the info Normand, The rear of the 80 has a fastback rear glass and an area to mount the speakers in the corners that was made for rear speakers. My car has a flat rear glass behind the seats and a small compartment behind the seats. The corners are hollow and nothing solid to mount to. I wonder if anyone has made a panel or boxes to fit? Thanks Vettedude76

So sorry about the wrong answer
but I have found the box for your model.
BOOM BOX # A9700A ( with speakers )
and # 27610 ( without speakers ) but the price is $199.99
it is made to fit the space on the back.
Sorry again for the mistake.

I have a 79 L-82 and I built a box and tacked the amp on the back of it to hide it. Of course a 79 has a little more room in the back than a 76, but I'm sure you could built something similar if you have access to a table saw. Since I have more room I put put two 10 inch Rockford Fosgate subs in the box and two Infiniti Kappa 4 by 6 speakers attached to the sides. If you would like it, I could send you some pictures so you can get a better idea what you might want to do. Let me know how things go.

Try ebay, you can pick up a pair of 6x9 enclosures for about $30-$35(buy now price w/shipping included).Maybe less as their starting bids are about $10 + shipping. These boxes have clip terminals, which makes removal easy.

I just recently put a set of 6X9's and and amp and CD changer in the rear compartment of my 75 coupe. I put a piece of 1/2" fibreboard that "floats" right under the deck lid. You can rest the front of the board on the ledge where the brackets to hold the rear window trim are. I drilled a amall hole in these to run wheet metal screws into. The back of my board rests on a lip just above the rear light. I then made some panels out of masonite to hold the 6x9's and put them at a 45-degree angle in the corners. I tried to just pressure fit the panels into the corneres, but they didn't hold so I used "L" brackets to hold them to the upper panel. I mounted the CD changer to hang down from the top of the fibreboard, and put the amp in the glove compartment next to the battery. If you'd like pics email me and I'll send you some. MY TOPS STILL FIT BACK THERE!! It sounds pretty good too. Not a lot of bass when your at 70mph, but I can still hear the system well. Sony xplod speakers (ebay $59) an old 100-watt amp I had around, and a Kenwood FM modulated CD changer. I may try to mound a 6" Bazooka tube back there too, but so far my system has only cost me about $100 (I'm cheap). I put black vinyl on the speaker panels, but the spray adhesive I used isn't holding well. I would suggest using fibreboard with these as well and the more air tight you can make them the better. Also, it helped my bass when I stuffed polyfill behind the speaker panels. Here's where I got the idea for the sound board
